Slack is betting that the next frontier of enterprise artificial intelligence isn't a standalone chatbot window, but the group chat where work already happens. This week, the Salesforce-owned messaging platform introduced Slackforce Surfaces, a capability that lets users describe what they want to Slackbot and have AI assemble interactive reports, dashboards, polls, presentations and even microsites — all without leaving the conversation.
The announcement drew strikingly different framing from the outlets covering it. The Verge led with the creative angle, describing a tool that lets users "vibe-code interactive charts and reports inside chats." VentureBeat split its coverage between the practical — "Slackbot can now pull your CRM data, generate charts, and send DocuSigns — all from a chat message" — and the strategic, arguing Slack "wants to drag AI coding out of the terminal and into the group chat." A separate hands-on piece on MSN approached it from the user's seat, recounting how ChatGPT inside Slack transformed messy team conversations into a clean weekly status report.
How Slackforce Surfaces actually works
At its core, the feature is a natural-language builder. A user tells Slackbot what they need, and the assistant reaches across relevant conversations and connected applications — Google Drive, Salesforce and other linked services — to compile the underlying data. Slackbot then generates a Surface: a living, shareable artifact that can be pinned to a channel, commented on, and interacted with by colleagues in real time.
The Verge highlighted one of Slack's own demos, in which a user asked Slackbot to build an "arcade-themed visualization" of AI token usage — a small but telling example of how far the output can stray from a standard spreadsheet. Because Surfaces live inside Slack, they inherit the platform's social layer: reactions, threads and shared context come built in.

Slack's advantage here is structural.
