xQc is one of my favorite streamers to watch. This is one of his speeches during a stream that felt really true and motivating to me. It’s about our thoughts that we can be happy only after reaching to some goal in our life.
The happiness goals
Many of us place conditions on our joy, thinking, “I’ll be happy when…” We convince ourselves that we can only be happy when we attain certain goals, possess specific possessions, or reach particular milestones.
The reality is what we thought will happen rarely happens when we reach that goal. And if the journey toward that goal was not enjoyable, It’s going to feel absolutely miserable at the destination.
“When I get my degree, I will be happy.”
“When I get a job, I’ll be happy”
“When I get into a relationship, I’ll be happy”
“When I finally get healthy, I’ll be happy”
It’s the small things
He is right. Every huge goal, that we think will make us really happy for the rest of our life leads back to the same emptiness. Often, the small things like playing or talking with friends, working out, and doing hobbies that you find really enjoyable and interesting are the ones that are most memorable when you look back.
You have to be happy now. Or at least, find some way to be happy now.
Ignoring the utopia
What is success? Is it respect? wealth? maybe. But constantly striving towards these goals, often distracts from the present. Instead of living in the moment, we end up procrastinating about the past and dreaming about the future.
You will always be told that there is a better life. And you will be told that you can achieve that better life only if you study more and work even harder. It is the modern-day way of exploiting other humans for achieving self-goals.
Art is long and life is short. You are paid for how easy you are to replace and not for how hard you work. That cool-looking Car, that huge mansion, Who are we trying to impress?
I used to be like “I’ll be happy then…”, “I’ll be happy when this happens…” and when I got past those walls I wasn’t happy as I thought I would be. And I said to myself, “Dude… happiness was supposed to be on the other side of that wall…” but that’s when I realised that happiness is here. happiness is now. If you are not happy with what you have right now, you will never be happy with what you have then. If you think you can dodge that, I hope your goals aren’t too far away cause that wall is gonna hit way harder if it is.” — Félix Lengyel aka xQc
